The unusual cake with an unusual tale

Now I do like a cake with a good story behind it and especially for a cake that is not of the traditional kind, so as you can imagine I was delighted to have an order for a cake of a raw steak. This story started out innocent enough. The cake was to have the birthday girl's birthday present, a super dooper steak knife, placed in it. And what better cake to make a raw steak than a red velvet. So out came the Hummingbird Bakery cookbook and soon after came out the sunken and not very red cake out of the oven and swiftly into the bin (via my lips for a quick taste or few). So, it was back to my fail safe vanilla sponge which was dyed a startling shade of red and layered with strawberry jam. Then the birthday girl's knife was not delivered on time so to add some excitement to the cake I made some mini-me's of the birthday girl's kittens. The cake was ready to party, even if it had grown to larger proportions than the planned steak and resembled more of a joint of beef.

So, off to the party Miss Cake and the steak went. And a fabulous party it was too. The birthday girl cut her cake, passed some around and posed with it and saved her bit to eat the next day lounging off her hangover on the sofa with X Factor. However, the steak became victim to party revellers and drunken behaviour and something explicable happened to the poor cake..... it was ruined and had to be put to rest on the bin (unbeknown to birthday girl until the next day when she arrived for the steak collection, hungry for cake). The poor birthday girl did not get to eat her cake after all. All she had to show for it was a tempting photo of how close she got.

From Summer to Christmas in a blink of the eye (or should that be bite of the cake?)

Is it me or have we suddenly had the summer snatched away and replaced by chilly air? I have resorted to wearing a fleece and i'm sure it was only last week i was still in my Havaianas. The Cake residence has a new patio which is very exciting but my ideas of sun lounging will now have to wait until next summer. And i am finding my butter is not getting to room temperature like it should. Mr Cake will soon have to give in and allow me some central heating, i could blame it on the butter. So, when it gets colder and the evenings draw in and the supermarkets are flaunting 3 for 2 presents already what do i think of but Christmas! And of course another opportunity for more baking (and time to get excited about my good friends the K-Y's annual X Factor final/Christmas party with a feast better than Nigella's).

I have my fruit soaking in brandy ready for the first Christmas cake of the season and i am dreaming of white sparkly decorations. So, the conclusion to this story is that Miss Cake has started on the Christmas cakes and is ready for all of your orders! Personalised miniature cakes and festive cookies are what everyone will need this Christmas, i am telling you. Please get in touch for all of your Christmas baking needs!

The Focus party

I am very pleased to report the Focus cakes went swimmingly, as did the party. Myself and Mr Cake had a fab time making the most of the free bar and playing the casino with funny money with photos of the directors on (our good friend Chris looked scarily like the Queen). My kitchen is now getting back to normal after being a cupcake factory and has lost the mist of icing sugar created by the constant whirring of the Kitchen Aid.

I'm so excited that Miss Cake is taking off and the cake orders are flooding in. In the next few weeks i'll be cakecreating a shar pei dog, a boy on the drums, canoes and a train. Wish me luck!

The Focus 4 U Party and the neverending icing 'F's

This week has been full of cakepreparation (a word that may not be in the Oxford Dictionary but a term i think should be) for the exciting Focus 4 U party at Hotel du Vin in Brighton where i will be displaying a cakefeast! I am soooo excited as i am not only baking for it but will also be attending the party in all my finery. Focus are a local and very successful business so it will be a great opportunity for Miss Cake's goodies to be eaten by some business people and get the name out there.

So far the big cake is baked and iced and waiting to be adorned with its logo and i still have another 26 blue icing 'F's to make for the cupcakes, not to mention the '5's and the stars. Tomorrow will be fullcupcakesteam ahead and if anyone is in the vicinity of Norton Terrace you may smell the cupcake production line wafting out of my kitchen.

Right, better be getting on with those 'F's...........

My first blog!

Thought it is about time I get myself a blog, although what with this, Facebook and Twitter I will be spending more time in cyberspace than in my kitchen. But it means that I can spend even more time thinking and talking about my fave subject... cake, cake and more cake.

So, blog readers, prepare yourself for some incessant cake chat and a running commentary of life as Miss Cake.
